13/14, Men's S8, Eagles Need a Win

Malory Eagles

Saturday 15 February 2014

vs Wessex
With one preliminary game remaining, Malory Eagles are still at risk of being dumped from volleyball's Super 8s this year.  Malory needed maximum points from their last three prelim games but an unconvincing win against Riga and a narrow loss to Wessex leave the Eagles dangerously close to the relegation zone.  Riga are guaranteed demotion but Solent, Lynx and Malory could all finish 7th and face a play-off with the Division 1 runners up, Tendring.

Last weekend's journey to second placed Wessex did offer coach Jefferson Williams a glimmer of hope with his team taking a much needed point in the 25-19; 18-25; 25-17; 24-26; 15-11 ding-dong.  The Wessex team, benefiting from a well funded volleyball programme at the Wessex LeAF Academy, sported olympians Dan Hunter and Ben Pipes but young Malory stars Jermaine Miles and Leon Chambers were undaunted and repeatedly penetrated the Wessex defence.

Williams needs a win in the big London derby against arch rivals, Polonia.  The West Londoners beat Malory at home in November but will be given no quarter when they visit the Eagles Ernest Bevin home on Saturday. The match starts at 3:15pm.  Follow the Eagles on Twitter  @Malory_Eagles.
