Men
vs Sheffield
Lose

London's Malory volleyball club narrowly lost in their weekend battle against Sheffield's Hallam.  With both teams fielding veterans of the team from London 2012, the match was always going to be a battle of the GB titans.  Malory setter Kieran O'Malley, ably supported by big hitter Robin Miedzybrodzki and rising star Leon Chambers, matched up against GB team mates Joel Miller and the high flying Dami Bakare.

The first set was tense with both teams probing the commitment of their opponents.  Powerful jump serves from ex-Malory junior Bakare pressured the Malory receiving unit but O'Malley was able to optimise his attackers against a towering Sheffield frontline.  The lead flipped back and forth but Malory coach Jefferson Williams was able to steady his team enough to take the first set (25-21).

Set two followed a similar pattern with punishing serving from Sheffield matched by fast, intelligent attacks from Malory.  Sheffield were close but eventually succumbed, 25-20.

The increasing power of Bakare's jump serve was always going to have a major impact on the game and so it was that it allowed Sheffield to establish an early set three lead which Malory proved unable to reverse eventually losing the set 25-14.

Williams was able to rally his troops for set four but the Sheffield attack was consistently forcing errors in the Malory receiving line.  The 25-22 set win for Sheffield allowed them to draw even on set scores.

Having thrown away a two set lead, a demoralised Malory were unable to resist the Sheffield attack.  After only 10 minutes, the Eagles fell, gaining only 5 points before Sheffield closed the set with 15.  "They won points easily as our defence and block was under severe pressure", lamented Williams.

In spite of their loss, Malory move up to 5th in the Super8, still on track to gain a play-off place.  This weekend sees the Eagles play London rivals Lynx.
