Women
vs Wessex

Malory's women needed a win to maintain the promise of their newly strengthened side.  Last week's victory against Leeds will have raised their confidence but a home win would certainly see the team looking good for a top Super 8 finish.

Set one started with a strong serving run from setter Lauren Williams, forcing Wessex to take their first time out at 6-2.  Eagles continued to dominate after the re-start with excellent wing attacks from Julie Kuomo and captain Barbara Foster.  New signing Shaherah Jordan prowled the net, blocking any lame attempts by Wessex to penetrate Malory's middle.  The Londoner's consistency was proving hard for Wessex to counter and errors soon crept into the visitors' game, giving Malory a 10 point lead.  Wessex restored some order after the technical time-out but could not reclaim the lost points, eventually losing by 25 points to 15.

Set two opened with Rachel Turner taking over net play with power hitting and impenetrable blocks.  Lizzie Smith and Jess Grimson battled back for Wessex but could not contain a sparkling Malory performance, losing again, this time 25-16.

Wessex emerged for set three determined to present a stiffer challenge to their hosts.  With a one point lead at the second technical time-out, Wessex were able to maintain their form and expose weaknesses in the Malory defence.  In a nail-bitter finish, Wessex eventually won the third set 25-23.

The fourth set saw an enthusiastic Wessex battling against the slightly subdued Eagles.  The teams stayed neck-a-neck throughout but a stern team talk from Malory coach Jefferson Williams during his time-out dispatched the Londoner's with renewed determination.  An outstanding double block from Turner and Jordan gave Malory the edge which they used to push on and claim the set 25-21.

A well deserved win for Malory that places them third in the Super 8s.  A win against 2nd placed Polonia on October 23 will line the Eagles up nicely for a shot at the title.
