Women
vs Swiss Cottage

mevcsymlosesolo

Jefferson Williams has spent the summer re-building his top squads for the new Super 8 division.  The women's first team has new players at middle and wing attack and a more stable training squad than last season.  Along with some training changes, Eagles women now have the foundations to better their fifth place finish last year.

After an enthusiastic warm-up, Swiss Cottage took charge from the off with a strong serve & defence game.  Swiss won the race to 10 and soon forced coach Williams to use his bench, bringing on Mia Lowney for Rachel Turner.  Some huge blocks from captain Barbara Foster and sub Lowney kept Malory in contention but the visitors' greater consistency gave them the first set; 25-21.  Williams started the second set with Lowney while Swiss Cottage coach Danny Primus brought in Rebecca Lukac in place of Dagmara Wormiczek.  Swiss Cottage's more established team showed their greater preparation, consistently defending against Malory's attacks and countering with the heavy right arm of wing spiker Katarina Sumeghova.  The North Londoners again ground out a win, taking a seemingly unassailable 2 set lead.

New signings Shaherah Jordan and Rebecca Howorth started the third helping Malory to a small lead before the visitors once again defended themselves back into the set.  Malory's flashes of excellence were countered by frequent mistakes and difficulty handling the almost unstoppable Sumeghova.  There was drama late in the set when Swiss Cottage player Alexandra Jarman landed awkwardly and stopped play with a loud, piercing scream.  The 10 minute delay did nothing to derail Swiss Cottage as they pressed on to take the set by 25 points to 19.  An excellent win for Swiss Cottage and an unflattering scoreline for the Eagles.  A tough first game for the re-built Malory side as Swiss Cottage will surely challenge for the Super 8 title this year.
